The LORD Reigns!

The LORD's reign is announced in a way that makes the peoples tremble and the earth shake, for he is enthroned above the cherubim and exalted in Zion over all nations. His great and awesome name is to be praised because he is holy. The mighty King loves justice, establishes equity, and has done what is just and right in Jacob. Therefore his people are called to exalt him and worship at his footstool.

T1he LORD reigns; 2Great is the LORD in Zion; 3Let them praise Your great and awesome name — 4The mighty King loves justice. 5Exalt the LORD our God,

The psalm turns to Israel's history, naming Moses, Aaron, and Samuel as those who called on the LORD and were answered. He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud, and they kept his testimonies and statutes. God answered them as a forgiving God, yet one who still avenged wrongdoing. The chapter ends by calling the people once more to exalt the LORD at his holy mountain, because the LORD their God is holy.

6Moses and Aaron were among His priests; 7He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud; 8O LORD our God, You answered them. 9Exalt the LORD our God

Section summaryThe psalm opens by declaring that the LORD reigns from above the cherubim and by summoning the peoples and the earth itself to tremble before him. His greatness in Zion and his love of justice are celebrated, and worshipers are called to exalt him at his footstool because he is holy. The song then remembers Moses, Aaron, and Samuel calling upon the LORD and receiving answers from him, even as he remained both forgiving and avenging toward their deeds. It closes by returning to worship, urging God's people to exalt the LORD at his holy mountain because he is holy.
Role in the chapterThis section presents divine kingship as holy, just, and relational. It joins cosmic awe, covenant memory, and active worship to teach that the reigning God is both transcendent over all peoples and personally responsive to those who call on him.
