Chapter 99

The LORD Reigns!

This psalm proclaims the LORD's reign in language of awe, holiness, justice, and remembered covenant history. The peoples are called to tremble before the enthroned God whose greatness in Zion is above all nations, while worshipers are urged to praise his awesome name and bow at his footstool. The psalm then recalls Moses, Aaron, and Samuel as intercessors who called on the LORD and were answered, showing that the holy God was both forgiving and just. It ends by urging renewed exaltation of the LORD, because he is holy.

Psalm 99 is an enthronement psalm shaped by holiness. It presents God's kingship not only as power over the nations, but as righteous rule that hears prayer, disciplines sin, and draws his people into reverent worship.
