You Are My Refuge and My Fortress
The psalm begins by portraying the faithful person as one who dwells in the shelter of the Most High and rests beneath the Almighty's shadow. That nearness becomes a spoken confession: the LORD is refuge, fortress, and the God in whom trust is placed. Because of that relationship, deliverance is promised from hidden snares and deadly plague, while God's protective care is pictured as sheltering wings and unbreakable faithfulness.
H1e who dwells in the shelter of the Most High 2I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress, 3Surely He will deliver you 4He will cover you with His feathers;
The psalmist says the one who trusts in God need not fear nighttime terror, flying arrows, darkness-borne pestilence, or midday destruction. Even if thousands fall all around, the faithful one remains under divine care and sees the judgment of the wicked rather than being swept away with them.
5You will not fear the terror of the night, 6nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, 7Though a thousand may fall at your side, 8You will only see it with your eyes
Because the LORD has been made a dwelling place, evil is said to be restrained and destructive plague held back. Angelic guardianship is then introduced: God commands his messengers to bear up the faithful and keep them from stumbling. The paragraph ends with images of triumph over lion, cobra, young lion, and serpent, showing dominion over what threatens life.
9Because you have made the LORD your dwelling— 10no evil will befall you, 11For He will command His angels concerning you 12They will lift you up in their hands, 13You will tread on the lion and cobra;
The psalm closes with God himself speaking. Because the faithful person loves him and knows his name, God promises deliverance, protection, answered prayer, companionship in trouble, rescue, honor, long life, and the vision of his salvation.
14“Because he loves Me, I will deliver him; 15When he calls out to Me, 16With long life I will satisfy him
