The Purpose of John’s Book

Jesus did many other signs before his disciples, but John does not write them all in this book here either.

J30esus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book.

These signs are written so readers may believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and have life in his name.

31But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.

Section summaryJohn says that Jesus performed many other signs before his disciples, but these are the ones written in the book. He gives the purpose plainly: readers may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing, have life in his name.
Role in the chapterThe closing purpose statement explains why this book records selected signs and what the written record is meant to produce in readers there at last.
