Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

After the tomb scene, the disciples go back to their own homes, leaving Mary there alone at the tomb behind them.

T10hen the disciples returned to their homes.

Mary stands outside the tomb weeping, and while she weeps she bends down again to look inside the tomb.

11But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent down to look into the tomb,

She sees two angels in white sitting where Jesus’ body had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.

12and she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and the other at the feet.

The angels ask why she is weeping, drawing attention to her sorrow at the empty tomb there before them.

13“Woman, why are you weeping?” they asked.

She turns and sees Jesus standing there, but she does not know that it is him at first because of her sorrow.

14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there. But she did not recognize that it was Jesus.

Jesus asks why she is weeping and whom she is seeking, giving the moment a direct personal question from him.

15“Woman, why are you weeping?” Jesus asked. “Whom are you seeking?”

Jesus speaks her name, and she recognizes him at once as the risen Lord standing before her there in person.

16Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

Jesus tells her not to cling to him, because he has not yet ascended to the Father, and he sends her to his brothers with that message.

17“Do not cling to Me,” Jesus said, “for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go and tell My brothers, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’”

Mary goes and announces to the disciples that she has seen the Lord and repeats his words to her there.

18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what He had said to her.
