David’s Psalm of Thanksgiving

David entrusts a thanksgiving song to Asaph, and the song calls the people to thank, sing, seek, and remember the LORD’s works. Israel is addressed as the offspring of His servant.

O7n that day David first committed to Asaph and his associates this song of thanksgiving to the LORD: 8“Give thanks to the LORD; call upon His name; 9Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; 10Glory in His holy name; 11Seek out the LORD and His strength; 12Remember the wonders He has done, 13O offspring of His servant Israel,

The song names the LORD as Israel’s God and urges the people to remember His covenant forever. It traces that covenant through Abraham and Jacob to the promise of Canaan.

14He is the LORD our God; 15Remember His covenant forever, 16the covenant He made with Abraham, 17He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, 18‘I will give you the land of Canaan

The psalm recalls the fathers when they were few, wandering among nations, yet protected by God from oppression. Even kings are warned not to touch His anointed ones.

19When they were few in number, 20they wandered from nation to nation, 21He let no man oppress them; 22‘Do not touch My anointed ones!
