Zephaniah 2:1-3·~1 min

A Call to Repentance

Zephaniah addresses the nation with urgency, calling it to gather before the decree bursts forth like chaff in the wind. The moment before judgment is brief, but it is real. The humble are told to seek the LORD, to seek righteousness, and to seek humility. Their only safety lies not in denial or strength but in submission to God. The paragraph turns the threat of the day into a gracious call to refuge through repentance.

G1ather yourselves, gather together, 2before the decree takes effect 3Seek the LORD, all you humble of the earth

Section summaryThe chapter opens with an urgent appeal to a shameless nation to gather before the decree of judgment takes effect. The language suggests that there is still a narrow interval in which response is possible. The humble of the earth are specifically called to seek the LORD, righteousness, and humility. The section does not promise easy escape, but it does hold out the possibility of being hidden on the day of the LORD's anger. Judgment is therefore not merely announced; it is used to press the hearer toward a posture of repentance and refuge.
Role in the chapterThis section introduces the chapter by turning prophetic warning into an urgent summons to humble repentance.
