A Call to Repentance

People bring Jesus reports of Galileans killed by Pilate and others crushed by a tower. He refuses the claim that the victims were worse sinners and twice warns that all must repent or perish.

A1t that time some of those present told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2To this He replied, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered this way? 3No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam collapsed on them: Do you think that they were more sinful than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

Section summaryJesus answers two reports of sudden death by rejecting comparisons of guilt and pressing the same warning on every listener. The tragedies become a call to repent before judgment falls.
Role in the chapterThis opening warning turns public tragedy into personal responsibility. It refuses moral ranking and leaves repentance as the urgent response.
