Book 36 · Minor Prophet

Zephaniah

Zephaniah announces the approaching day of the LORD against Judah and the nations, exposing complacency, idolatry, and pride before ending with the promise of a purified people and a rejoicing God in their midst.

Within the Book of the Twelve, Zephaniah concentrates prophetic judgment into one of the Bible's starkest portrayals of the day of the LORD. It gathers together themes already heard in earlier prophets, covenant unfaithfulness, social corruption, international arrogance, and the certainty of divine reckoning, and presses them toward a comprehensive crisis that touches Judah and the whole earth. Yet Zephaniah also contributes a distinctive note of restoration: after judgment comes purification, humble refuge, and joy renewed by God's own presence. The book therefore functions as both a severe warning against complacent religion and a promise that the LORD's final purpose is not merely to expose sin but to create a cleansed and singing people.
