Zephaniah 1:1-6·~1 min

Zephaniah Prophesies Judgment on Judah

Zephaniah's word is anchored in the reign of Josiah, but the message itself rises immediately to world-shaking scope: the LORD will sweep away life from the face of the earth. That universal note then turns directly toward Judah and Jerusalem, where idolatry and compromised allegiance have polluted worship. Baal devotion, rooftop worship of the stars, divided oaths, and simple refusal to seek the LORD all come under indictment. The paragraph presents Judah's sins as evidence that covenant privilege has not removed accountability but intensified it.

T1his is the word of the LORD that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah: 2“I will completely sweep away 3“I will sweep away man and beast; 4“I will stretch out My hand against Judah 5those who bow on the rooftops 6and those who turn back

Section summaryThe chapter begins by identifying Zephaniah and the historical setting of his message, then moves quickly into the LORD's declaration of sweeping judgment. What sounds at first like an undoing of creation becomes focused on Judah and Jerusalem, where idolatry, divided worship, and apostasy have corrupted covenant life. The LORD names Baal, astral worship, false oaths, and those who have stopped seeking Him. The section therefore presents judgment as both comprehensive and personal: the God who rules the whole earth is stretching out His hand specifically against His own people's unfaithfulness.
Role in the chapterThis section introduces the prophet and establishes Judah's idolatry and covenant betrayal as the immediate object of divine judgment.
