The Shepherd Struck, the Sheep Scattered
The sword is summoned against the LORD's shepherd and against the man who stands close to Him. The striking of the shepherd leads immediately to the scattering of the sheep, while the LORD also turns His hand toward the little ones. The verse holds judgment and care together, showing that scattering occurs within the LORD's purposeful governance.
A7wake, O sword, against My Shepherd,
The scattering gives way to a sifting of the land in which two parts are cut off, while a third is preserved. That surviving third is brought through the fire to be refined like silver and tested like gold. The process ends in restored covenant relationship: they call on the LORD, He answers, and each side acknowledges the other in covenant language. The paragraph shows that judgment is not the final word, because refinement produces a people who truly belong to God.
