Chapter 13

An End to Idolatry and The Shepherd Struck, the Sheep Scattered

Zechariah 13 continues the repentance and renewal themes that emerged at the end of the previous chapter, but now develops them in sharper cleansing and refining images. The chapter opens with the promise of a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, a source of cleansing from sin and impurity. From that cleansing flows a sweeping purge of idolatry, false prophecy, and the unclean spirit from the land. The chapter then imagines a world in which false prophetic identity becomes shameful rather than honored: deceivers abandon their disguises, deny their status, and attempt to explain away their wounds. The second half turns abruptly to the striking of the shepherd. The sword is summoned against the LORD's shepherd and the man close to Him, and when the shepherd is struck the sheep are scattered. Yet even this scattering becomes part of a refining process. Most of the land is cut off, but a third is brought through the fire, refined like silver and tested like gold, until mutual covenant recognition is restored: they call on the LORD, He answers, and both sides affirm the covenant bond.

Within Zechariah 9-14, chapter 13 deepens the closing burden's vision of final restoration by showing that the LORD's saving work includes both cleansing and severe refinement. Chapter 12 ended with mourning over the One they pierced; chapter 13 explains the consequences of that grace by describing the removal of impurity, the collapse of false spiritual authority, and the refining of a remnant through judgment. In the broader movement of Zechariah, this chapter stands at a crucial hinge between inward purification and the final conflict of chapter 14. It clarifies that the future of God's people is not secured by external deliverance alone but by the purging of idolatry, the exposure of falsehood, and the testing of a faithful remnant. The striking of the shepherd also connects this chapter to the book's sustained concern with leadership, showing that judgment, scattering, and restoration are bound together under the LORD's sovereign purpose.

An End to Idolatry

Open section

1On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the people of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity. 2And on that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will erase the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered. I will also remove the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land. 3And if anyone still prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will say to him, ‘You shall not remain alive, because you have spoken falsely in the name of the LORD.’ When he prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will pierce him through.

4And on that day every prophet who prophesies will be ashamed of his vision, and he will not put on a hairy cloak in order to deceive. 5He will say, ‘I am not a prophet; I work the land, for I was purchased as a servant in my youth. ’ 6If someone asks him, ‘What are these wounds on your chest?’ he will answer, ‘These are the wounds I received in the house of my friends.’
