Make a Joyful Noise
The psalm opens by commanding all the earth to make a joyful noise, sing God's glorious name, and declare how awesome his deeds are. God's power is so great that his enemies cringe before him and all the earth is envisioned as bowing and singing to him. The worshipers are then invited to behold God's works, especially his turning the sea into dry land so that his people crossed on foot and rejoiced in him. Because he rules forever by his power and watches the nations, rebels are warned not to exalt themselves.
F1or the choirmaster. A song. A Psalm. 2Sing the glory of His name; 3Say to God, “How awesome are Your deeds! 4All the earth bows down to You; 5Come and see the works of God; 6He turned the sea into dry land; 7He rules forever by His power;
The peoples are called to bless God because he has preserved life and kept his people from slipping. Yet that preservation included refinement: God tested them like silver, brought them into a net, laid burdens on their backs, and led them through fire and water. Even so, the affliction was not the end of the story, because God brought them out into a place of abundance and relief.
8Bless our God, O peoples; 9He preserves our lives 10For You, O God, have tested us; 11You led us into the net; 12You let men ride over our heads;
The voice becomes personal as the worshiper enters God's house with burnt offerings to fulfill vows made during distress. He promises rich sacrifices and then calls all who fear God to hear what God has done for his soul. He cried aloud in praise, knowing that cherished sin would have closed his prayer, but God truly listened and attended to his voice. The psalm ends by blessing God for not rejecting either the prayer or the steadfast love that answered it.
13I will enter Your house with burnt offerings; 14the vows that my lips promised 15I will offer You fatlings as burnt offerings, 16Come and listen, all you who fear God, 17I cried out to Him with my mouth 18If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, 19But God has surely heard; 20Blessed be God, who has not rejected my prayer
