Waiting on God

David opens by saying his soul waits in silence for God alone, because from God come salvation and stability. Even though opponents batter him like a leaning wall and bless with their mouths while cursing inwardly, God remains his only rock and fortress.

F1or the choirmaster. According to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. 2He alone is my rock and my salvation. 3How long will you threaten a man? 4They fully intend to cast him down from his lofty perch;

David repeats the call to his own soul to rest in God alone and grounds that command in God's enduring role as salvation, fortress, honor, and refuge. He then turns outward, urging the people to trust God at all times and pour out their hearts before him, because God is a true refuge.

5Rest in God alone, O my soul, 6He alone is my rock and my salvation; 7My salvation and my honor rest on God, my strong rock; 8Trust in Him at all times, O people;

David measures lowborn and highborn people alike and finds them weightless beside God, and he warns against trusting oppression, robbery, or accumulating riches. He concludes with a double confession: power belongs to God, and steadfast love belongs to the Lord, who repays each person according to his work.

9Lowborn men are but a vapor; 10Place no trust in extortion 11God has spoken once; 12and loving devotion to You, O Lord.

Section summaryDavid declares that his soul waits silently for God alone because God is his rock, salvation, fortress, honor, and refuge, even while attackers seek to thrust him down by using flattering speech over a heart bent on curse and collapse. He then exhorts his own soul again to rest in God and widens that counsel to all the people, telling them to pour out their hearts before God because he is a refuge. Against that reality he sets the emptiness of low and high people alike and warns against trusting extortion, robbery, or growing riches. The psalm ends with the settled conviction that power belongs to God and steadfast love belongs to the Lord, who judges and rewards each person justly.
Role in the chapterThis section functions as wisdom-infused trust instruction. It moves from personal confession to communal exhortation and ends with the theological foundation that makes such waiting reasonable and secure.
