Chapter 50

The Mighty One Calls

This psalm presents God as the mighty judge who shines forth from Zion, summons heaven and earth, and convenes his covenant people before him. He clarifies that he is not rebuking them for too few sacrifices but for imagining he needs their offerings, calls instead for thanksgiving, covenant faithfulness, and prayer in trouble, then turns to the wicked with a devastating indictment of hypocrisy before ending with a warning that those who forget God face judgment while those who offer thanks and order their way rightly will see his salvation.

Psalm 50 is a covenant lawsuit that exposes the difference between ritual performance and true worship. It teaches that God owns all creation, requires grateful trust rather than divine feeding through sacrifice, and judges not only public religion but also the moral incoherence of those who recite his words while embracing theft, adultery, slander, and practical forgetfulness of God.

16To the wicked, however, God says, 17For you hate My instruction 18When you see a thief, you befriend him, 19You unleash your mouth for evil 20You sit and malign your brother; 21You have done these things, and I kept silent;

22Now consider this, you who forget God, 23He who sacrifices a thank offering honors Me,
