Chapter 49

The Evanescence of Wealth

This wisdom psalm summons all peoples, rich and poor alike, to hear a meditation on the limits of wealth and the certainty of death. It argues that no one can ransom a life from the grave with money, that both wise and foolish alike die and leave their possessions behind, that the self-confident wealthy perish like beasts, and that only God can redeem life from Sheol, so the hearer need not fear when others grow rich and glorious.

Psalm 49 functions like a sermon set to music, exposing the false security of riches and leveling humanity under mortality. It teaches that wealth cannot conquer death, reputation cannot survive the grave, and understanding consists in fearing neither prosperous people nor temporary splendor because final deliverance belongs only to God.

13This is the fate of the foolish 14Like sheep they are destined for Sheol. 15But God will redeem my life from Sheol,

16Do not be afraid when a man grows rich, 17For when he dies, he will carry nothing away; 18Though in his lifetime he blesses his soul — 19he will join the generation of his fathers, 20A man who has riches without understanding
