Into Your Hands I Commit My Spirit

David opens by asking the LORD to be his refuge and deliverer, appealing to God as rock, fortress, and guide who frees him from hidden nets. He commits his spirit into God's hands, renounces worthless idols, rejoices in divine steadfast love, and thanks God for seeing his affliction and setting his feet in a spacious place instead of handing him over to the enemy.

F1or the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 2Incline Your ear to me; 3For You are my rock and my fortress; 4You free me from the net laid out for me, 5Into Your hands I commit my spirit; 6I hate those who cling to worthless idols, 7I will be glad and rejoice in Your loving devotion, 8You have not delivered me to the enemy;

The psalm turns into distress as David asks for mercy in grief, describing eyes dimmed by sorrow, strength failing through anguish, and life worn down by trouble. He has become a reproach, forgotten like a dead man, and hears slander and terror from many as enemies conspire together against his life.

9Be merciful to me, O LORD, 10For my life is consumed with grief 11Among all my enemies I am a disgrace, 12I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind. 13For I hear the slander of many;

Against that pressure David reasserts, 'You are my God,' and places his times in God's hands, asking to be delivered from persecutors. He seeks the shining of God's face and saving steadfast love, asks that he not be ashamed for calling on the LORD, and asks that lying, proud, contemptuous lips be silenced instead.

14But I trust in You, O LORD; 15My times are in Your hands; 16Make Your face shine on Your servant; 17O LORD, let me not be ashamed, 18May lying lips be silenced —

The psalm widens into praise for the great goodness the LORD stores up for those who fear him and hides safely in his presence from human schemes. David blesses the LORD for marvelous steadfast love, admits that in alarm he once thought himself cut off, yet recognizes that God still heard him, and ends by calling all the saints to love the LORD, be strong, and let their hearts take courage as they wait for him.

19How great is Your goodness 20You hide them in the secret place of Your presence 21Blessed be the LORD, 22In my alarm I said, 23Love the LORD, all His saints. 24Be strong and courageous,
