The LORD Is My Salvation

David opens with fearless confidence because the LORD is his light, salvation, and stronghold, so wicked attackers and encamped armies do not undo his trust. At the heart of that confidence is one desire: to dwell in the LORD's house, behold his beauty, and inquire in his temple, where God shelters him in trouble and raises his head above surrounding enemies until praise and sacrifice overflow.

O1f David. 2When the wicked came upon me to devour my flesh, 3Though an army encamps around me, 4One thing I have asked of the LORD; 5For in the day of trouble 6Then my head will be held high

The psalm shifts into direct petition as David asks the LORD to hear, be gracious, and answer when he seeks God's face. He begs not to be hidden from or forsaken by the God who helps him, asks to be taught and led on a level path because of enemies, and pleads not to be delivered over to false and violent accusers.

7Hear, O LORD, my voice when I call; 8My heart said, “Seek His face.” 9Hide not Your face from me, 10Though my father and mother forsake me, 11Teach me Your way, O LORD, 12Do not hand me over to the will of my foes,

David reasserts his certainty that he will see the LORD's goodness in the land of the living. The closing line turns that hope into exhortation, calling the soul to wait for the LORD with strength, courage, and patient expectation.

13Still I am certain to see 14Wait patiently for the LORD;
