To You I Lift Up My Soul

David begins by lifting up his soul to God and declaring his trust, asking not to be shamed before enemies while affirming that those who wait for the LORD will not be disgraced. From that posture of trust he asks to be taught God's ways and led in truth, then pleads for the LORD to remember compassion and covenant love rather than the sins of his youth.

O1f David. 2in You, my God, I trust. 3Surely none who wait for You will be put to shame; 4Show me Your ways, O LORD; 5Guide me in Your truth and teach me, 6Remember, O LORD, Your compassion and loving devotion, 7Remember not the sins of my youth,

The psalm pauses to reflect on the character of the LORD as good, upright, and faithful in teaching sinners and guiding the humble in what is right. On that basis David asks pardon for his great iniquity, then describes the blessings of the one who fears the LORD: guidance, abiding good, inheritance, and the confidential knowledge of God's covenant.

8Good and upright is the LORD; 9He guides the humble in what is right 10All the LORD’s ways are loving and faithful 11For the sake of Your name, O LORD, 12Who is the man who fears the LORD? 13His soul will dwell in prosperity, 14The LORD confides in those who fear Him,

David fixes his eyes on the LORD and pleads for grace in loneliness, heart-trouble, affliction, sin, and hostile enemies. He asks God to guard and deliver him, to preserve him through integrity and uprightness as he waits for the LORD, and finally broadens the prayer to ask that God redeem Israel from all its troubles.

15My eyes are always on the LORD, 16Turn to me and be gracious, 17The troubles of my heart increase; 18Consider my affliction and trouble, 19Consider my enemies, for they are many, 20Guard my soul and deliver me; 21May integrity and uprightness preserve me, 22Redeem Israel, O God,
