Chapter 16

The Presence of the LORD

This psalm begins as a prayer for preservation but quickly becomes a confession that every good thing, every secure boundary, and every lasting joy are found in the LORD himself. By refusing rival gods, delighting in the holy ones, and rejoicing in God's presence, the song moves into a confidence so strong that even the grave cannot overturn it.

Psalm 16 stands as one of the Psalter's clearest statements that life, inheritance, counsel, and joy all converge in communion with God. It is both personal trust and forward-looking hope, teaching that the LORD is not merely protection from danger but the believer's portion now and the guarantee of life beyond corruption.
