Chapter 17

Hear My Righteous Plea

This psalm is a sustained plea for vindication from a servant who asks to be heard not on the basis of empty words but on a life examined by God. It moves from confidence in tested integrity, to urgent requests for shelter from ruthless enemies, and finally to the conviction that while the wicked are satisfied with this world, the righteous will be satisfied in beholding God's face.

Psalm 17 adds to the Psalter's theology of lament by showing that righteous suffering may appeal directly to God's searching knowledge without claiming sinlessness in the abstract. It contrasts present worldly fullness with the deeper hope of communion with God, making final satisfaction in his presence the answer to violent pressure now.

A1 prayer of David. 2May my vindication come from Your presence; 3You have tried my heart; 4As for the deeds of men — 5My steps have held to Your paths;

13Arise, O LORD, confront them! 14from such men, O LORD, by Your hand— 15As for me, I will behold Your face in righteousness;
