Chapter 149

Sing to the LORD a New Song

This hallelujah psalm calls Israel to sing a new song to the LORD in the assembly, rejoicing in their Maker and King with dancing, tambourine, and harp because the LORD takes pleasure in his people and adorns the humble with salvation. The song then becomes militant praise, with the faithful exulting on their beds while holding the high praises of God in their mouths and a two-edged sword in their hands to execute written judgment on nations and kings, so that the honor of divine victory belongs to all his faithful ones.

Psalm 149 follows the universal summons of Psalm 148 by focusing that praise in the gathered people of God. It fits the Psalter's closing movement by showing that hallelujah is not only cosmic admiration but covenant participation: Israel rejoices in her Maker-King, celebrates salvation for the humble, and is portrayed as sharing in the LORD's righteous triumph over the rebellious nations.
