Chapter 150

Let Everything That Has Breath Praise the LORD

The Psalter closes with an unbroken hallelujah, calling for God to be praised in his sanctuary and in his mighty heavens, for his mighty acts and surpassing greatness, and with every kind of festal instrument. The final word is a universal summons: everything that has breath is to praise the LORD, so that the book ends by gathering worship, creation, history, music, and life itself into one final act of praise.

Psalm 150 serves as the climactic close of both Book V and the entire Psalter. After the preceding hallelujah psalms widened praise from the faithful, to Zion, to heaven and earth, and to the gathered saints, this final psalm removes every remaining limit: every place, every reason, every instrument, and every breathing creature is summoned into praise of the LORD.
