Proverbs

Chapter 1

The Beginning of Knowledge and more

Proverbs 1 opens by stating the book's purpose: to impart wisdom, discipline, prudence, and understanding, all grounded in the fear of the LORD. It then warns a son against joining violent, greedy men and closes with Wisdom herself crying out in public, announcing both judgment for those who refuse her and security for those who listen.

As the opening chapter of Proverbs, this passage lays down the book's foundation and its first urgent choices. It defines true knowledge, exposes the ruinous pull of sinful companionship, and sets wisdom before the reader not as a private option but as a public summons that must be answered.

Wisdom Calls Aloud

W20isdom calls out in the street, 21in the main concourse she cries aloud, 22“How long, O simple ones, will you love your simple ways? 23If you had repented at my rebuke,

24Because you refused my call, 25because you neglected all my counsel, 26in turn I will mock your calamity; 27when your dread comes like a storm, 28Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;

29For they hated knowledge 30They accepted none of my counsel; 31So they will eat the fruit of their own way, 32For the waywardness of the simple will slay them, 33But whoever listens to me will dwell in safety,
