Chapter 148

Praise the LORD from the Heavens

The psalm opens and closes with hallelujah while summoning praise to the LORD from every level of creation. First the heavens, angels, sun, moon, stars, highest heavens, and waters above are called to praise because the LORD commanded and created them and established them in enduring order; then the earth joins in through sea depths, weather, mountains, trees, beasts, birds, rulers, peoples, men, women, old, and young, until all creation is gathered around the exalted name of the LORD and the praise of the God who has raised up strength for his people, Israel.

Psalm 148 advances the final hallelujah movement by turning the praise of restored Zion into a universal chorus. After Psalm 147 celebrated the LORD's care for Jerusalem, provision in creation, and gift of his word to Jacob, Psalm 148 widens the frame so that heaven, earth, and every creaturely order are summoned to praise the same exalted LORD whose nearness to Israel becomes the center of cosmic worship.
