The Blessed Fear of the LORD

The psalm begins by blessing the one who fears the LORD and walks in his ways, then unfolds that blessing through enjoyed work and a fruitful household. It closes by widening the picture from one family's table to Zion, Jerusalem, future generations, and the peace of Israel, showing how private blessing belongs inside the life of the whole people.

Section summaryThe psalm blesses everyone who fears the LORD and walks in his ways, then describes that blessing in concrete terms: the fruit of labor enjoyed, a fruitful wife within the home, and children around the table like young olive shoots. From there it widens the horizon, asking for blessing from Zion, for the sight of Jerusalem's good all one's days, for children's children, and for peace upon Israel.
Role in the chapterThis section functions as a portrait of covenant flourishing. It shows that the fear of the LORD is not sterile or abstract, but yields a life marked by provision, fruitfulness, generational continuity, and a blessing that finally belongs not only to one house but to Zion and Israel together.
