Psalms 122:1-9·~1 min

Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem

The psalm begins in glad response to the invitation to go to the LORD's house and lingers over the joy of finally standing in Jerusalem. From there it widens into praise for the city's gathered worship and ordered rule, then becomes a prayer that peace would dwell within Jerusalem for the sake of the people who love her and for the sake of the LORD's house at her center.

A1 song of ascents. Of David. 2Our feet are standing in your gates, 3Jerusalem is built up 4where the tribes go up, 5For there the thrones of judgment stand, 6Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: 7May there be peace within your walls, 8For the sake of my brothers and friends, 9For the sake of the house of the LORD our God,

Section summaryThe speaker rejoices at the call to go to the house of the LORD and celebrates standing inside Jerusalem, the city where the tribes gather and the seats of judgment stand. That joy becomes intercession as the psalm asks for peace and security within Jerusalem's walls, not as a private wish, but for the sake of companions and for the sake of the house of the LORD.
Role in the chapterThis section functions as a pilgrim's arrival song that ripens into public prayer. It teaches that delight in Jerusalem is not sentimental attachment alone, but a desire for the city's peace because worship, justice, fellowship, and the LORD's dwelling are bound together there.
