Chapter 122

Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem

This psalm begins with joy at the invitation to go to the house of the LORD and with the glad realization that the pilgrims now stand inside Jerusalem's gates. From there it praises the city as the place where the tribes gather and justice is seated, then turns into a prayer that Jerusalem's peace would flourish within its walls for the sake of kinship, friendship, and the house of the LORD.

Within the Songs of Ascents, Psalm 122 moves from the journey's strain and protection into arrival and shared worship. It fits Book V by showing Jerusalem not merely as a destination on a map, but as the place where praise, covenant identity, ordered public life, and intercession for communal peace meet.
