Chapter 112

The Blessed Fear of the LORD

This psalm answers the praise of Psalm 111 by showing what the fear of the LORD looks like in an actual human life. The chapter describes the blessed person as stable, generous, compassionate, and unafraid, someone whose household is marked by enduring righteousness and whose trust in the LORD holds firm even under bad news, while the wicked watch with frustration as their own desires come to nothing.

Psalm 112 pairs naturally with Psalm 111: after the previous chapter praised God's covenant faithfulness and ended with the fear of the LORD as the beginning of wisdom, this one shows the kind of person that fear produces. It fits Book V by presenting blessedness not as private comfort alone, but as a durable, public life shaped by delight in God's commands and by openhanded mercy toward others.
