Chapter 113

The LORD Exalts the Humble

This psalm calls for the LORD's name to be praised everywhere and always, then asks what kind of God could be so high above the nations and yet still stoop low enough to see and act. The answer comes in images of reversal: the poor are lifted from the dust, the needy are raised from the ash heap, and the barren woman is given a joyful home, so the chapter turns divine transcendence into comfort for the lowly.

Psalm 113 opens the Hallel sequence with a praise that stretches from sunrise to sunset and from heaven to the dust. It fits Book V by holding together two truths that the Psalter repeatedly insists on: the LORD is unmatched in majesty, and that very majesty is seen not in distance from the weak, but in his willingness to humble himself and exalt them.
