Chapter 111

Majestic Is His Work

This psalm is a compact hallelujah that praises the LORD by naming the character of his works: they are great, splendid, memorable, gracious, and just. The chapter moves from wholehearted praise, to meditation on covenant deeds such as provision, inheritance, and redemption, and then ends with wisdom, teaching that the right response to God's holy name and enduring righteousness is not admiration alone, but reverent obedience.

Psalm 111 opens a paired wisdom-praise movement with Psalm 112. It fits Book V by showing that worship after deliverance is not vague gratitude, but careful remembrance of what the LORD has actually done in covenant history, and that such remembrance properly matures into the fear of the LORD, which is the beginning of wisdom.
