The Blessings of Wisdom

The one who finds wisdom is declared blessed, because wisdom yields better gain than silver, is more precious than jewels, and offers life, honor, pleasantness, peace, and a tree-of-life stability to those who embrace her. Wisdom is thus shown to exceed material wealth in both worth and fruit.

B13lessed is the man who finds wisdom, 14for she is more profitable than silver, 15She is more precious than rubies; 16Long life is in her right hand; 17All her ways are pleasant, 18She is a tree of life to those who embrace her,

The LORD founded the world by wisdom and established the heavens by understanding, so the son must not lose sight of sound judgment. Such wisdom brings life, adornment, secure steps, restful sleep, courage in sudden danger, and confidence that the LORD himself will keep the learner from falling.

19The LORD founded the earth by wisdom 20By His knowledge the watery depths were broken open, 21My son, do not lose sight of this: 22They will be life to your soul 23Then you will go on your way in safety, 24When you lie down, you will not be afraid; 25Do not fear sudden danger 26for the LORD will be your confidence

The wise person must not withhold good when able to act, must not delay help to a neighbor, and must not devise or accuse evil without cause. Wisdom is therefore expressed in timely generosity, social trust, and restraint from unjust harm.

27Do not withhold good from the deserving 28Do not tell your neighbor, 29Do not devise evil against your neighbor, 30Do not accuse a man without cause,

The reader must not envy violent men, because the LORD detests the perverse but is intimate with the upright. His curse rests on the wicked house, his blessing on the righteous dwelling, his mockery on mockers, and his honor on the wise, while fools inherit disgrace.

31Do not envy a violent man 32for the LORD detests the perverse, 33The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, 34He mocks the mockers, 35The wise will inherit honor,

Section summaryWisdom is praised as better than silver or jewels, life-giving, peaceable, and woven into the LORD's ordering of creation itself. The section then turns practical again, showing that those who hold fast to wisdom walk securely, do good without delay, refuse harm and violence, and live under the LORD's blessing rather than his opposition.
Role in the chapterThis closing section functions as both hymn and exhortation. It magnifies wisdom's worth and cosmic depth, then shows how possessing wisdom reorders sleep, courage, neighbor-love, justice, and final destiny.
