The Tribe of Judah

Judah’s entry remembers the deaths of Er and Onan, then names the surviving clan lines and records the tribe’s large total. The tribe is counted with both memory and continuity in view.

T19he sons of Judah were Er and Onan, but they died in the land of Canaan. 20These were the descendants of Judah by their clans: 21And these were the descendants of Perez: 22These were the clans of Judah, and their registration numbered... 76,500.

Section summaryJudah’s record notes the deaths of Er and Onan in Canaan before listing the tribe’s remaining lines and large total of 76,500. Even here, the census remembers loss while marking Judah’s enduring strength.
Role in the chapterThis section places Judah’s size alongside a brief recollection of earlier judgment in the family line. It advances the census while quietly linking the present numbering to Israel’s longer family history.
