Numbers 26:52-56·~1 min
Inheritance by Lot
The LORD commands that the land be divided among the tribes according to their numbers, with larger tribes receiving more and smaller tribes less, yet with each portion assigned by lot. The inheritance is both measured and allotted.
T52hen the LORD said to Moses, 53“The land is to be divided among the tribes as an inheritance, according to the number of names. 54Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one; each tribe is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those registered. 55Indeed, the land must be divided by lot; they shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers. 56Each inheritance is to be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes.”
Section summaryWith the census complete, the LORD directs that the land be divided as an inheritance according to the tribes’ numbers, yet assigned by lot. Size will affect the portion, but the lot will govern the distribution itself.
Role in the chapterThis section explains why the census matters. It turns numbers into land and holds together two principles at once: proportional inheritance and the ordering of the lot.
