Numbers 26:63-65·~1 min

Only Caleb and Joshua Remain

Moses and Eleazar complete the numbering on the plains of Moab, and the chapter notes that none counted at Sinai remain except Caleb and Joshua. The old generation has passed just as the LORD said.

T63hese were the ones numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho. 64Among all these, however, there was not one who had been numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai. 65For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Section summaryThe chapter closes by marking this census as entirely new: none of those counted at Sinai remain except Caleb and Joshua. The wilderness sentence has run its course, and the people now standing in Moab are the survivors of another generation.
Role in the chapterThis closing section interprets the census historically. It shows that the numbering is not only administrative but also the visible proof that the LORD’s word about the wilderness generation has been fulfilled.
