The Reward of Service

To receive Jesus’ messengers is to receive Jesus and the One who sent him. Receiving a prophet or righteous person brings corresponding reward, and even a cup of cold water given to a little one because of discipleship will not go unrewarded.

H40e who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives the One who sent Me. 41Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward. 42And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is My disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”

Section summaryJesus identifies his messengers with himself and himself with the Father who sent him. Receiving a prophet, a righteous man, or even one of the little ones because of discipleship brings reward, and the smallest kindness is not forgotten.
Role in the chapterThis final section closes the chapter with received presence and promised reward. Service to Jesus’ people is treated as service to Jesus, and even the least visible gift remains seen.
