Judgments and Promises

The LORD says He revealed Himself to those who did not ask for Him, while all day long He held out His hands to a rebellious people who walked in their own ways and constantly provoked Him through idolatry, occult impurity, and arrogant self-separation. Their sins are written before Him, and He will repay both their iniquities and those of their fathers because they dishonored Him openly and persistently.

1I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me; 2All day long I have held out My hands 3to a people who continually provoke Me to My face, 4sitting among the graves, 5They say, ‘Keep to yourself; 6Behold, it is written before Me: 7both for your iniquities

Yet God will not destroy the whole cluster, because blessing remains within it: He will preserve servants, bring descendants from Jacob and Judah to inherit His mountains, and make the land fruitful for those who seek Him. By contrast, those who forsake the LORD and prepare tables for false gods will be destined for the sword, because when He called they did not answer and chose what He hates.

8This is what the LORD says: 9And I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, 10Sharon will become a pasture for flocks, 11But you who forsake the LORD, 12I will destine you for the sword,

The Lord GOD then lays out a stark reversal: His servants will eat, drink, rejoice, and sing, while His enemies suffer hunger, thirst, shame, and anguish. The rebels leave behind their name as a curse, but God gives His servants another name, and the future in the land belongs to those who bless and swear by the God of truth because former troubles are forgotten from His sight.

13Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: 14My servants will shout for joy with a glad heart, 15You will leave behind your name 16Whoever invokes a blessing in the land

Section summaryThe opening movement shows the LORD making Himself available to those who had not sought Him while stretching out His hands all day to a rebellious people who provoke Him through idolatrous and defiling practices. Even so, He will not destroy all alike: as new wine found in a cluster preserves a blessing, so He will bring forth descendants and chosen heirs from Jacob, but those who forsake Him are destined for judgment, while His servants are distinguished by joy, provision, and a new identity grounded in the God of truth.
Role in the chapterThis section answers rebellion with both retributive justice and preserving mercy, dividing between the future of God's enemies and the future of His servants.
