Chapter 59

Sin Separates Us from God and The Covenant of the Redeemer

Isaiah 59 answers the suspicion that the LORD is somehow unable or unwilling to save by insisting that the true barrier is the people's own sin, which has filled their hands, lips, courts, and streets with violence, deceit, injustice, and estrangement from peace. The chapter then moves from confession and social collapse to divine intervention, showing the LORD Himself arming for judgment and salvation, coming as Redeemer to those in Jacob who repent, and establishing a lasting covenant of Spirit and word with His people.

This chapter matters because it names sin not merely as personal failure but as the force that disorders an entire society and cuts it off from God, while also showing that human inability is ultimately met by divine initiative. Isaiah 59 holds together moral diagnosis, communal confession, holy judgment, and covenant redemption, making it a crucial bridge from exposure of guilt to the LORD's own saving action.

S1urely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, 2But your iniquities have built barriers 3For your hands are stained with blood, 4No one calls for justice; 5They hatch the eggs of vipers 6Their cobwebs cannot be made into clothing, 7Their feet run to evil; 8The way of peace they have not known,

9Therefore justice is far from us, 10Like the blind, we feel our way along the wall, 11We all growl like bears 12For our transgressions are multiplied before You, 13rebelling and denying the LORD, 14So justice is turned away, 15Truth is missing,

16He saw that there was no man; 17He put on righteousness like a breastplate,
