The Covenant of the Redeemer

The LORD repays His enemies according to their deeds so that His name and glory are feared across the earth, and when He comes with overwhelming force it is both judgment and deliverance. The Redeemer comes to Zion for those in Jacob who turn from transgression, and His answer culminates in covenant permanence: His Spirit and His words will remain with His people, their children, and their children's children forever.

S18o He will repay according to their deeds: 19So shall they fear the name of the LORD 20“The Redeemer will come to Zion, 21“As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD. “My Spirit will not depart from you, and My words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children and grandchildren, from now on and forevermore,” says the LORD.

Section summaryThe closing movement describes the LORD repaying His adversaries according to their deeds so that His name will be feared from west to east, and His coming power will sweep in like a rushing stream driven by His breath. Out of that judgment comes hope for Zion: the Redeemer comes to those who turn from transgression, and the chapter ends with a covenant promise that God's Spirit and His words will remain permanently with His people and their descendants.
Role in the chapterThis section closes the chapter by joining judgment, redemption, and enduring covenant presence in the LORD's final answer to sin.
