The Census Offering

The LORD tells Moses that a census requires each counted man to pay a ransom for his life, a half shekel offering to the LORD, so that no plague comes on the people.

T11hen the LORD said to Moses, 12“When you take a census of the Israelites to number them, each man must pay the LORD a ransom for his life when he is counted. Then no plague will come upon them when they are numbered. 13Everyone who crosses over to those counted must pay a half shekel, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs. This half shekel is an offering to the LORD.

Every man twenty and older must give the same amount, with no distinction between rich and poor. The money is used for the Tent of Meeting as a memorial and atonement for their lives.

14Everyone twenty years of age or older who crosses over must give this offering to the LORD. 15In making the offering to the LORD to atone for your lives, the rich shall not give more than a half shekel, nor shall the poor give less. 16Take the atonement money from the Israelites and use it for the service of the Tent of Meeting. It will serve as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD to make atonement for your lives.”

Section summaryWhen Israel is counted, each man must give a fixed ransom offering to the LORD so that numbering does not bring plague. The payment is the same for rich and poor and is assigned to the tent's service as a memorial of atonement.
Role in the chapterThis section shifts from tabernacle objects to the people themselves, showing that even being counted before the LORD carries sacred weight. It binds the whole community to the sanctuary through an equal offering.
