The Bronze Basin

The LORD commands a bronze basin with water to be placed between the Tent of Meeting and the altar so Aaron and his sons can wash their hands and feet.

A17nd the LORD said to Moses, 18“You are to make a bronze basin with a bronze stand for washing. Set it between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and put water in it, 19with which Aaron and his sons are to wash their hands and feet.

The priests must wash before entering the tent or approaching the altar, or they will die. This remains a permanent statute for Aaron and his descendants.

20Whenever they enter the Tent of Meeting or approach the altar to minister by presenting a food offering to the LORD, they must wash with water so that they will not die. 21Thus they are to wash their hands and feet so that they will not die; this shall be a permanent statute for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come.”

Section summaryA bronze basin is set between the tent and the altar so Aaron and his sons can wash before entering or serving. Their washing is not optional decorum but a standing requirement tied to life before the holy place.
Role in the chapterThis brief section places cleansing at the threshold of priestly service. It shows that approaching the tent and altar requires bodily preparation as part of the holiness already shaping the chapter.
