Praise from the Great Multitude

John looks and sees not a small remnant but a vast innumerable multitude from every people group standing before the throne and the Lamb in white robes with palm branches. Their loud cry attributes salvation entirely to God and to the Lamb. The angels, elders, and living creatures then fall before the throne and join in worship, ascribing blessing, glory, wisdom, thanks, honor, power, and strength to God forever. The paragraph presents redemption as both universal in reach and centered wholly on divine salvation.

A9fter this I looked and saw a multitude too large to count, from every nation and tribe and people and tongue, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. 10And they cried out in a loud voice: 11And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. And they fell facedown before the throne and worshiped God, 12saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

One of the elders asks John who the white-robed multitude is and from where they have come. John defers to the elder, who explains that these are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. Their whiteness does not come from earthly purity but from robes washed in the blood of the Lamb. The paragraph interprets the multitude through tribulation, redemption, and sacrificial cleansing.

13Then one of the elders addressed me: “These in white robes,” he asked, “who are they, and where have they come from?” 14“Sir,” I answered, “you know.”

Because they belong to the Lamb, the redeemed stand before God's throne and serve Him continually, sheltered by His presence. Their former sufferings are overturned: they will hunger and thirst no more, nor will the sun or scorching heat strike them. The Lamb at the center of the throne becomes their shepherd, leading them to springs of living water, and God Himself wipes every tear from their eyes. The final movement transforms tribulation into everlasting consolation and care.

15So he replied, “These are the ones who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason, 16‘Never again will they hunger, 17For the Lamb in the center of the throne

Section summaryAfter hearing the numbered company, John looks and sees a multitude beyond counting from every nation, tribe, people, and tongue standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They are clothed in white and carry palm branches, celebrating salvation that belongs to God and to the Lamb. Heaven responds as angels, elders, and living creatures fall before the throne in worship. An elder then interprets the multitude for John, identifying them as those who have come out of the great tribulation and whose robes have been made white in the blood of the Lamb. Because of this, they stand before God, serve Him continually, and are sheltered by His presence. Hunger, thirst, scorching heat, and sorrow are removed, for the Lamb in the midst of the throne shepherds them and leads them to living waters, and God wipes away every tear from their eyes.
Role in the chapterThis closing section reveals the final standing of the redeemed as a multinational worshiping people sheltered and shepherded by God and the Lamb.
