Chapter 7

144,000 Sealed and Praise from the Great Multitude

Revelation 7 interrupts the terrifying momentum of the seals with a vision of divine preservation and final worship. Before the winds of judgment are released, John sees four angels holding back destruction until the servants of God are sealed on their foreheads. He hears the number of the sealed as 144,000 from the tribes of Israel, presented in ordered fullness and covenantal identity under God's protection. The scene then opens wider as John sees a countless multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language standing before the throne and before the Lamb in white robes with palm branches. Their cry attributes salvation to God and to the Lamb, and the angels join in worship around the throne. An elder explains that this multitude has come out of the great tribulation, their robes made white in the blood of the Lamb. The chapter ends with promises of shelter, satisfaction, and shepherding under the Lamb, who leads them to springs of living water while God wipes away every tear. Revelation 7 therefore answers the terror of the sixth seal by showing who truly stands: those marked by God and redeemed by the Lamb.

This chapter is crucial because it provides an interpretive and pastoral pause between the sixth and seventh seals. Revelation 6 ended by asking who can stand in the day of wrath. Revelation 7 answers that question not by denying tribulation but by revealing God's preserving seal and the Lamb's redemptive shelter. The chapter also holds together two perspectives that must both be kept in view. On the one hand, God's people are numbered, known, and sealed by Him. On the other hand, they appear as an innumerable multinational multitude whose salvation publicly magnifies both God and the Lamb. Revelation 7 therefore teaches the church that tribulation does not nullify divine ownership, and that suffering is not the last word over those who belong to the Lamb. The chapter deepens Revelation's theology of perseverance by showing that God's people are protected for final salvation even as they pass through real affliction.

144,000 Sealed

Open section

A1fter this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back its four winds so that no wind would blow on land or sea or on any tree. 2And I saw another angel ascending from the east, with the seal of the living God. And he called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea: 3“Do not harm the land or sea or trees until we have placed a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.”

4And I heard the number of those who were sealed, 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel: 5From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed, 6from the tribe of Asher 12,000, 7from the tribe of Simeon 12,000, 8from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000,

Praise from the Great Multitude

A9fter this I looked and saw a multitude too large to count, from every nation and tribe and people and tongue, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. 10And they cried out in a loud voice: 11And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. And they fell facedown before the throne and worshiped God, 12saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

13Then one of the elders addressed me: “These in white robes,” he asked, “who are they, and where have they come from?” 14“Sir,” I answered, “you know.”

15So he replied, “These are the ones who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason, 16‘Never again will they hunger, 17For the Lamb in the center of the throne

  1. 01vv. 1-8144,000 SealedJohn first sees four angels restraining the destructive winds at the four corners of the earth, showing that judgment is under deliberate heavenly control. Another angel rises with the seal of the living God and commands that the earth, sea, and trees not be harmed until God's servants are sealed on their foreheads. John then hears the number of the sealed: 144,000 from the tribes of Israel, presented in ordered completeness. The emphasis falls not merely on arithmetic but on identity, ownership, and preservation. Before judgment advances, God marks His servants as His own.
  2. 02vv. 9-17Praise from the Great MultitudeAfter hearing the numbered company, John looks and sees a multitude beyond counting from every nation, tribe, people, and tongue standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They are clothed in white and carry palm branches, celebrating salvation that belongs to God and to the Lamb. Heaven responds as angels, elders, and living creatures fall before the throne in worship. An elder then interprets the multitude for John, identifying them as those who have come out of the great tribulation and whose robes have been made white in the blood of the Lamb. Because of this, they stand before God, serve Him continually, and are sheltered by His presence. Hunger, thirst, scorching heat, and sorrow are removed, for the Lamb in the midst of the throne shepherds them and leads them to living waters, and God wipes away every tear from their eyes.
