The Fourth Seal: Death

At the fourth seal, the final horseman appears: a pale green horse whose rider is explicitly named Death, followed by Hades. Their authority extends over a fourth of the earth and includes multiple forms of destruction: sword, famine, plague, and beasts. The vision compresses a broad range of covenant-judgment imagery into one terrifying figure, making death itself the dominant force of the seal.

A7nd when the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8Then I looked and saw a pale green horse. Its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed close behind. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill by sword, by famine, by plague, and by the beasts of the earth.

Section summaryThe fourth seal releases a pale green horse whose rider is named Death, with Hades following behind. Together they are granted authority over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine, plague, and wild beasts. The vision gathers earlier judgments into a more comprehensive devastation, showing death not merely as one possibility among many but as an active rider in the sequence. This section reveals how far the seal judgments can reach under divinely limited but terrible permission.
Role in the chapterThis section gathers the consequences of conquest, war, and famine into the more sweeping reign of death over the earth.
