The Fifth Seal: The Martyrs
With the fifth seal, John no longer sees another horseman but the souls of the slain gathered under the altar because of their fidelity to God's word and testimony. Their cry asks the holy and true Lord how long it will be before justice is done and their blood is avenged. They are given white robes, a sign of vindication, and told to rest a little longer until the full number of future martyrs is complete. The paragraph holds together divine justice, delayed vindication, and the honored place of the martyrs before God.
A9nd when the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony they had upheld. 10And they cried out in a loud voice, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge those who dwell upon the earth and avenge our blood?” 11Then each of them was given a white robe and told to rest a little while longer until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers, were killed, just as they had been killed.
