A New Heaven and a New Earth

John sees a new heaven and a new earth because the first order has passed away, and he sees the holy city, the New Jerusalem, descending from God like a bride prepared for her husband. A loud voice from the throne declares that God's dwelling is now with humanity and that He will be with them as their God. Every tear is wiped away, and death, mourning, crying, and pain are removed because the former things have passed away. The paragraph announces the end of estrangement and suffering through God's permanent presence.

T1hen I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: 4‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’

The One seated on the throne declares that He is making all things new and commands that the faithful and true words be written down. He announces His identity as the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, and promises the water of life freely to the thirsty. The one who overcomes will inherit these promises and enjoy filial covenant relationship with God. By contrast, the cowardly, unbelieving, immoral, idolatrous, and false are assigned to the lake of fire, the second death. The paragraph pairs lavish promise with uncompromising holiness.

5And the One seated on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.” 6And He told me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give freely from the spring of the water of life. 7The one who overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be My son. 8But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death.”

The One seated on the throne declares that He is making all things new, offers the water of life to the thirsty, promises inheritance to the one who overcomes, and warns that the unclean share in the second death. The section presents the new creation as both comfort and covenant fulfillment, but also as a realm reserved for the holy.
Role in the chapterThis opening section announces the new creation, God's direct dwelling with His people, and the final division between inheriters of life and those under judgment.
