Satan Cast into the Lake of Fire

Once the thousand years are complete, Satan is released and goes out to deceive the nations in every direction, gathering Gog and Magog for battle in numbers like the sand of the sea. They march over the broad earth and surround the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire comes down from heaven and consumes them. Then the devil who deceived them is thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and false prophet already are, to be tormented forever. The paragraph stresses both the persistence of evil's hostility and the absolute finality of God's judgment upon it.

W7hen the thousand years are complete, Satan will be released from his prison, 8and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth — Gog and Magog — to assemble them for battle. Their number is like the sand of the seashore. 9And they marched across the broad expanse of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and consumed them. 10And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, into which the beast and the false prophet had already been thrown. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Section summaryWhen the thousand years are complete, Satan is released and immediately resumes his old work of deception, gathering the nations from the four corners of the earth, called Gog and Magog, for battle. Their number is immense, and they surround the camp of the saints and the beloved city. Yet no extended war follows: fire comes down from heaven and consumes them, and the devil is cast into the lake of fire where the beast and false prophet already are. The section presents the final satanic rebellion as brief, futile, and conclusively judged.
Role in the chapterThis middle section shows that Satan's last attempt to deceive and rebel is immediately overthrown and ends in eternal punishment.
