Chapter 20

Satan Bound and more

Revelation 20 moves from Christ's victory over the beast into the binding of Satan, the reign of the saints, the devil's final overthrow, and the last universal judgment. John sees an angel descend from heaven with authority over the Abyss and a great chain, binding the dragon, that ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan, for a thousand years so that he can no longer deceive the nations in the same way until the appointed time is complete. During that period John sees thrones and the vindicated people of God, especially those who were faithful unto death and did not worship the beast, coming to life and reigning with Christ. After the thousand years, Satan is released briefly, deceives the nations once more, and gathers them for battle, but the rebellion is ended immediately by fire from heaven and the devil is cast into the lake of fire where the beast and false prophet already are. The chapter then culminates in the vision of the great white throne, before which earth and heaven flee and before which the dead, great and small, are judged according to what is written in the books. Death and Hades themselves are thrown into the lake of fire, and all whose names are not found in the Book of Life share that final judgment. Revelation 20 therefore portrays the complete defeat of satanic deception, the vindication of Christ's people, and the final, universal judgment of all evil.

This chapter is central to the closing movement of Revelation because it shows the defeat of evil in progressively deeper layers. Chapter 19 overthrew the beast and false prophet; chapter 20 addresses the dragon himself, the final rebellion of the nations, and the last judgment of all the dead. It is also crucial because it emphasizes both divine sovereignty and moral accountability. Satan is bound, released, and condemned within limits set entirely by God, while the dead are judged according to their deeds before the great white throne. The reign of the saints with Christ further confirms that faithfulness under persecution is not lost but vindicated and honored. At the same time, the chapter demonstrates that evil remains irredeemably hostile to God: even after restraint, Satan deceives again when released, and the nations gather again for rebellion. The final casting of Death and Hades into the lake of fire shows that not only wicked powers but death itself is brought to an end. Revelation 20 therefore prepares for the new creation by showing that every rival power, every final accusation, and every death-bearing force must be judged and removed before the renewed world of chapters 21 and 22 can appear.

Satan Bound

Open section

T1hen I saw an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the Abyss, holding in his hand a great chain. 2He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3And he threw him into the Abyss, shut it, and sealed it over him, so that he could not deceive the nations until the thousand years were complete. After that, he must be released for a brief period of time.

4Then I saw the thrones, and those seated on them had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or hands. And they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5The rest of the dead did not come back to life until the thousand years were complete. This is the first resurrection. 6Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection! The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years.

vv. 7-10

Satan Cast into the Lake of Fire

Open section

W7hen the thousand years are complete, Satan will be released from his prison, 8and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth — Gog and Magog — to assemble them for battle. Their number is like the sand of the seashore. 9And they marched across the broad expanse of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and consumed them. 10And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, into which the beast and the false prophet had already been thrown. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

vv. 11-15

Judgment before the Great White Throne

Open section

T11hen I saw a great white throne and the One seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from His presence, and no place was found for them. 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne. 13And books were opened, and one of them was the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books. The sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead, and each one was judged according to his deeds. 14Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death — the lake of fire. 15And if anyone was found whose name was not written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

  1. 01vv. 1-6Satan BoundJohn sees an angel bind Satan and shut him in the Abyss for a thousand years so that he cannot deceive the nations in the same way until the appointed time is complete. He then sees thrones and the people of God, especially those who were martyred and those who refused the beast's worship and mark, coming to life and reigning with Christ. This first resurrection is marked as blessed and holy, with the second death having no power over those who share in it. The section presents both the restraint of satanic deception and the vindication of faithful saints.
  2. 02vv. 7-10Satan Cast into the Lake of FireWhen the thousand years are complete, Satan is released and immediately resumes his old work of deception, gathering the nations from the four corners of the earth, called Gog and Magog, for battle. Their number is immense, and they surround the camp of the saints and the beloved city. Yet no extended war follows: fire comes down from heaven and consumes them, and the devil is cast into the lake of fire where the beast and false prophet already are. The section presents the final satanic rebellion as brief, futile, and conclusively judged.
  3. 03vv. 11-15Judgment before the Great White ThroneJohn sees a great white throne and the One seated on it, before whose presence earth and heaven flee away. The dead, great and small, stand before the throne and are judged according to what is written in the books, while the Book of Life stands as the decisive register of belonging. The sea, Death, and Hades all yield up their dead, and each person is judged according to his deeds. Death and Hades are then cast into the lake of fire, and anyone not found in the Book of Life is thrown there as well. The section presents the final judgment as universal, just, and utterly decisive.
