The Two Witnesses

John is given a measuring rod and commanded to measure the temple, the altar, and the worshipers, an act that signals distinction, ownership, and preservation before God. Yet the outer court is excluded from that measuring because it is handed over to the nations, who will trample the holy city for forty-two months. The vision holds protection and exposure together: God knows and marks His worshiping people even while the holy city experiences real oppression.

T1hen I was given a measuring rod like a staff and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, and count the number of worshipers there. 2But exclude the courtyard outside the temple. Do not measure it, because it has been given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for 42 months.

God then empowers His two witnesses to prophesy in sackcloth for 1,260 days, marking their ministry as urgent, sorrowful, and prophetic. They are described through olive-tree and lampstand imagery, showing that they stand before the Lord of the earth in sustained, God-given witness. Their mission is not defenseless: those who seek to harm them are judged, and they possess powers associated with Elijah and Moses, including shutting the sky, turning water to blood, and striking the earth with plagues. The paragraph presents witness as both mournful and mighty under divine commissioning.

3And I will empower my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.” 4These witnesses are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. 5If anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouths and devours their enemies. In this way, anyone who wants to harm them must be killed. 6These witnesses have power to shut the sky so that no rain will fall during the days of their prophecy, and power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they wish.

Section summaryJohn is told to measure the temple of God, the altar, and the worshipers, while the outer court is excluded and given to the nations who will trample the holy city for forty-two months. In that same period God appoints two witnesses to prophesy in sackcloth for 1,260 days. They are identified as the two olive trees and two lampstands standing before the Lord of the earth, and their ministry is marked by divine protection and prophetic power. Anyone seeking to harm them faces consuming judgment, and they wield authority over rain, waters, and plagues. The section presents witness as protected, empowered, and bound to a defined time of opposition.
Role in the chapterThis opening section establishes God's measured ownership of His people and the prophetic authority of the two witnesses within a period of trampling and conflict.
