Chapter 76

God’s Name Is Great in Israel

This psalm celebrates the God who has made himself known in Judah and established his dwelling in Zion, where he shattered the weapons of war and humbled the proud. The singer marvels at the Lord's radiance and at the helplessness of the mighty before his rebuke, then turns to the fear his judgment inspires when heaven declares sentence and the earth falls silent. Even human wrath ends up serving his praise, and the psalm closes by calling worshipers to fulfill their vows and bring tribute to the God who breaks the pride of rulers and is feared by the kings of the earth.

Psalm 76 is a victory hymn that exalts God as the warrior-judge whose presence in Zion secures his people and terrifies every earthly power. It moves from local praise in Israel to universal reverence, showing that the Lord's judgments quiet the earth, rescue the humble, and reduce even princes to trembling.
